Abstract
987,101. Electromechanical disc brakes. GLOBE INDUSTRIES Inc. July 7, 1961, No. 24743/61. Heading F2E. [Also in Division H2] In a spring applied electromagnetically released brake for a D.C. electromotor the motor shaft 4 has splines 32 carrying a disc 34 against which is pressed by a spring 46 a non-rotating disc 28 sliding on studs 24, 26 and having a peripheral ring of brake material 30. The disc 28 is retracted by a solenoid coil 12 in series with the armature of the motor; the coil has an effective number of turns insufficient to release the brake with running current, but sufficient to release it with the starting current and thereafter to keep it disengaged. The disc 34 is axially located on the motor shaft by a spring 38 and shims and snap ring 36. In miniature motors where only limited current of the order of 200 milliamps is available, the solenoid coil 12 may be bifilar, i.e. wound with two wires joining two separate coils connected in parallel.
