Abstract

624,735. Brakes. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 6, 1947, No. 390. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1945. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In an electric motor having a spring-loaded friction brake disengaged when the motor is energized, a non-rotatable braking armature is drawn away from a brake disc on the motor shaft by flux diverted from the motor field. As shown for an induction motor, the stator core 13 is axially longer than the rotor so as to provide a space S in which is situated a non- magnetic ring 16 supporting a series of radial laminated magnetic bars 17 which contact the ends of certain of the stator teeth to divert some of the flux. The brake disc 18 is pinned to the motor shaft and engages a further plate 20 which can slide axially, but is prevented from rotating by pins 23 engaging notches 23a in its periphery. A boss 24 on this plate, which houses the return spring, also carries the annular armature 25 comprising a coiled strip of dynamo steel or sintered iron.
