Abstract
871,437. Electromagnetic brakes and couplings. PYE Ltd. June 29, 1959 [July 15, 1958; Aug. 19, 1958], Nos. 22626/58 and 26633/58. Class 35. An induction coupling device comprises a magnetic rotor 2, 3 having polepieces 4 projecting towards a coaxial magnetic stator 10 from which it is spaced by an annular air gap 7, an electrically-conductive non-magnetic rotatable member 6 having a cylindrical portion 6a in the air gap 7, and means for producing a toroidal magnetic field which passes once only through the gap and returns via a further core 11. As shown, the means comprises one or more coils 14 excited by either direct or alternating current but alternatively may comprise one or more permanent magnets. As applied to a coupling either of the two shafts 1, 5 may be the respective input and output shafts, whilst when functioning as a brake the shaft 1 may be restrained and the load to be braked is connected to the shaft 5. The device is cooled by a fan 15, and the coupling or braking effect may be varied by adjusting the coil exciting current or the position of the permanent magnet or as shunt.
