Abstract

743,400. Electromagnetic couplings. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 3, 1955 [Aug. 20, 1954], No. 30/55. Class 35. An eddy current coupling comprises a stationary wound field member and two rotors, one of which has inbricated poles concentrically arranged with the other rotor and with the field member, one of rotors being connected to an input shaft and the other to an output shaft. The coupling shown in Fig. 1 has a fixed field member 36 with a field coil 44, a first rotor 28 having imbricated poles 20, 22 and a second iron or steel rotor 26. The various parts of the magnetic circuit of the apparatus are so arranged that the flux emanating from the winding 44 links both rotors, such that when rotor 28 is rotated an eddy current is induced in the rotor 26. The rotor 28 is connected to an input shaft 12 and the rotor 26 to an output shaft, but they may be adapted for reverse operation, i.e. rotor 26 as input rotor and rotor 28 as output rotor. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the fixed field member is located within the first rotor and the second rotor outside the first rotor.
