In a tachometer signal generator comprising two stators 12, 14 provided with windings 15 . . . 17 and having their polepieces 11a &c., 13 &c. disposed on opposite sides of an electricallyconducting body 10 mounted for rotation relatively to the stators and drivable by a device whose speed is to be measured, one stator 12 has twice as many polepieces as the other stator 14, those of the stator 12 are arranged in pairs, e.g. 11a, 11b with a winding, e.g. 15 embracing each pair, and each polepiece, e.g. 13b of the other stator 14 is disposed opposite two adjacent polepieces, e.g. 11b, 11c of two pairs of polepieces of the stator 12. When the input stator windings are fed with alternating current and the body 10 is stationary there is negligible linkage of input stator magnetic flux with the output windings and when the body 10 is rotated a path 19 for magnetic flux produced by eddy currents is provided linking the input stator and output windings. As shown, the body 10 is a cylindrical aluminium drag cup, the stators 12, 14 form the respective input and output members, and the windings of each stator are connected together either in series or parallel.
