In a motor or generator having a wound rotor and permanent magnet field, the flux from a fixed magnet 3 passes to the rotor 7 through magnetic yoke members 1, the total flux passing to the rotor being bucked or boosted by an angularly adjustable magnet 6. The pole faces 2 may be replaced by laminated polepieces, and the adjustable magnet, which may be cylindrical, may also carry a dial pointer and indexing means.
