Abstract

1,178,355. Electromagnetic clutches and brakes. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE & CLUTCH CO. 2 May, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 20775/68. Headings F2C, F2E and F2L. [Also in Division H1] In an electromagnetically actuated clutch, as shown, or brake (13), Fig. 1 (not shown), the electromagnet polepieces 34, 35 defining pole faces 37, 38 are formed as cylinders by spirally winding a strip of ferromagnetic material, e.g. silicon steel, coated with an insulator, so that eddy-current-induced lays in the toroidal flux circuit are eliminated, annular or segmental friction material 36 being inserted between the pole faces, and solid ferromagnetic rings 43, 44 being held in position at the ends of the polepieces by a plastics body 55, 56, 57 moulded around the polepieces to encapsulate the whole, radial holes being formed in the polepieces to allow the plastics material to flow between the polepieces and form ring 57 holding the polepieces together. As shown, the flux circuit is completed by a ring 46 on a baseplate 48 fixed to the clutch housing, and carrying a multiple turn coil 32 for insertion between the polepieces. The polepieces, ring 46, and base-plate 48 are all split longitudinally to prevent circumferential continuity. The clutch comprises an armature (27), Fig. 1 (not shown), carrying segmental solid iron stampings (24) spot welded thereto, and splined on a collar (28) keyed to an input shaft (11), and the plastics body 55, 56, 57, is fast with a collar 39 keyed to an output shaft 12. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a brake (13) comprises an armature (67) splined to a collar (68) keyed to the output shaft 12, and the plastics body is pinned to a base-plate (64) bolted to the brake casing. The rings 43, 44 and 46 are omitted, and the polepieces (61), (62) directly abut the base-plate (64) which completes the toroidal flux circuit.
