Abstract

693,955. Magnetic fluid clutch - brakes. BRITISH THOMSON -HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1951 [Oct. 11, 1950] , No. 23390/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A magnetic fluid combined clutch and brake device comprises a driving member, a driven member, brake means, gaps between the parts containing a magnetically susceptible mixture, magnetic means in one of the members to create a magnet field in the gaps, and shunt means for preventing the magnetic field from being created in one of the said gaps. As shown, a driving shaft 2 carries a member 14 with a magnetic ring inset 15, and a driven shaft 3 carries an armature formed by a permanent ring magnet 10 with pole pieces 11, 12. A fixed brake ring member 18 of magnetic material surrounds the armature and magnetically susceptible mixture 26. 27 fills the gaps between the parts. Non-magnetic rings 23, 25 and a magnetic ring 24 in the armature cause the magnetic flux to cross and recross the gaps and thus couple the parts together. Control means are provided in the form of an annulus 28 of magnetic material which acts as a shunt for the flux and is axially movable by a lever 32 acting through the linkwork shown. In the Figure, flux passes from the magnet 10 through parts 11, 28, 24 to the magnetically susceptible mixture 27, brake member 18 and pole piece 12, but bypasses the magnetically susceptible mixture 26, so that the driving and driven shafts 2, 3 are not coupled together and the driven shaft is braked. If the shunt is moved to the right, the flux passes through the magnetically susceptible mixture 26 to couple the driving and driven shafts but bypasses the magnetically susceptible mixture 27, the brake means accordingly being rendered ineffective. Specifications 649,553 and 688,247 are referred to.
