Abstract
869,166. Friction clutches. EATON MANUFACTURINGCO. Feb. 17, 1959 [Feb. 19, 1958], No. 5451/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In an electromagnetically operated friction clutch in which an armature 40 is engaged with the friction element 33 by a permanent magnet 15 and moved away from it for disengagement by energizing a solenoid 30 setting up an opposing flux, both magnetic fluxes are arranged to follow a single series path through the armature, a pole ring 23, the permanent magnet and a second pole ring 22. As shown the permanent magnet, which may be constituted by a series of separate segments or blocks, is positioned between parallel limbs of the L-sectioned pole rings, the magnet elements and the solenoid 30 being embedded in non-magnetic epoxy resin 39. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the permanent magnet is located between the friction element and the solenoid.
