Abstract

797,260. Electromagnetic clutches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. May 17,1.956 [May 20, 1955], No. 15463/56. Class 35. A magnetic fluid clutch has two relatively rotatable magnetic members, one of which comprises an outer portion 18, 20 and 22 connected by a plate 36 and angular support 38 to an inner portion 40, the annular gap between the portions containing fluid magnetic material 50 and having an annular portion 44 of the second magnetic member located therein. The outer portion of the first magnetic member is connected to the input shaft 12 by a plate 16, the inner portion being rotatable about a bearing 56, whilst the second magnetic member is connected to the output shaft 14 through a radial portion 42 and a vibration damper. A coil 24 is energized through slip-rings 28 and 30 and lead 26 to produce a magnetic field which will be constrained by the disposition of the magnetic members to a path having four gaps in series, i.e. through parts 18, 20, 44, 40, 44 and 22. The reluctance of the alternative path through 36 and 38 is made relatively high, by suitably dimensioning these members or by making them of non-magnetic material. Side-plates and labyrinth seals are provided to retain the magnetic fluid. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,553, [Croup XXXIV].
