734,049. Magnetic fluid couptings. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. March 27; 1953, No. 8520/53. Class 35. A magnetic fluid clutch has a disc 16 which is spaced from the driving poles against the axial force of the working flux by low-friction lining surfaces 68, 70 which are impregnated with ferrous particles to reduce their reluctance. The field member 12 is excited by a coil 22 fed from slip-rings 44, 46 and its magnetic circuit A is closed through an axially movable armature 14 mounted on flat springs 54 secured to the casing 10. The clutch disc 16 is mounted on splines 62 to permit axial play. The clutch disc has oblique slots 76 and its outer edge is cut back to form scoops 78 so that rotation of the disc pumps the magnetic liquid 80 towards the centre, leakage being prevented by labyrinth seals 82, 84. Specification 677,534 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,533.
