Abstract

642,749. Friction clutches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1947, No. 26940. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1946. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] An electromagnetic clutch has a stationary coil in a housing with a hub surrounding a driving sleeve with an end face extending beyond the hub and co-operating with an armature which is axially movable on its shaft so that it can be spring-urged away from the sleeve when the coil is deenergized into engagement with a braking surface the armature and sleeve being slotted to reduce eddy currents. As shown, the driving member is the slotted cup 12 on the end of the sleeve 7 and the armature 18 is moved axially on the shaft 14 by spring 21 into engagement with a braking surface 22 on the housing 1 when the coil 25 is deenergized. The sleeve 7 and the armature 18 are separated from the fixed parts by small air gaps 11, 27, respectively.
