[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] E l e c t r o - magnetic clutches. - An electromagnetic clutch or brake without frictional contact between the parts comprises an inner wound field member 3, Fig. 2, keyed on one shaft, and an outer armature member 2 keyed on the other shaft, a groove 8 enabling them to be centred magnetically. One of the shafts may be of non - magnetic metal. The field member 3 is either of the homopolar or heteropolar type. The armature 2 may be provided with a winding formed of copper bars 18, which are short-circuited at starting and open-circuited when coupling has been effected. The field and armature members may, alternately, be arranged side by side. The use of the apparatus as a dynamometer is shown in Fig. 5.
