Abstract
610,928. Electromagnetic clutches. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and LAIRD, J. A. April 10, 1946, No. 10975. [Class 80 (ii)] The wear in an electromagnetic friction clutch is automatically compensated without affecting the relationship of the armature and its co-operating part by screw-thread means between a pair of the clutch parts. A clutch plate c, splined to a sleeve f which is splined on the driven shaft g, is clamped by the energization of the winding j and attraction of the armature k between the driving members a, b which are normally urged apart by the springs i on the driving pins e. The armature k is supported on one-way clutch n, which is in free screw-thread connection at m with the sleeve f in such a manner that when slip occurs in the friction faces the .sleeve f rotates relatively to the armature k and re-adjusts the clutch, unscrewing of the connection m due to inertia on freeing the clutch being prevented by freeing the clutch n. In a modification the nut of the screw-thread connection is frictionally held against the oneway clutch during conditions of engagement under the action of the electromagnet.
