Abstract

611,752. One-way clutches. GEAR GRINDING MACHINE CO. April 29, 1946, No. 12915. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] In a one-way clutch in which sprags A extend between the concentric surfaces F, G of the driving and driven members, the sprags are so shaped that when the rotational speed of the clutch exceeds a predetermined value the centrifugal force on the sprag exceeds the loading of the energizing means H and the clutch frees. As shown, the energizing means is an outwardly expanding annular coil spring H which bears against a point J to the right of the centre of gravity B of the sprag. The line of action E, M of the centrifugal force on the mass passes to the left of the point of contact K and the line of action E, N of the spring H passes to the right of point K, so that at a predetermined speed the moment due to the centrifugal force exceeds the moment due to the spring and the sprag rocks to free the clutch. In a second embodiment shown, the energizing means is an annular contracting coil spring.
