Abstract

786,938. Engine starter drives. BOSCH, GES., R. Jan. 27, 1956 [Feb. 5, 1955], No. 2695/56. Class 7(5). [Also in Group XXXV] A shaft 20 carrying a starter pinion 13 is arranged to be driven through an over-running friction clutch 41, 42 and an internally and externally oppositely threaded sleeve 35 carrying a clutch nut 38 on its outer thread and within which the shaft is threadedly engaged so as to rotate relatively to the sleeve in a direction opposite to the starting direction when it is axially displaced into its operative starting position which displacement is limited by an abutment 40 upon the shaft abutting the sleeve which is resiliently and axially supported relatively to an input member 32 of the clutch which is adapted to be coupled to a starter motor, whereby to damp the impact of the abutment on the sleeve. As shown an elastic annular disc 51 is provided on the open edge of the input member 32. To start the engine solenoid 15 is energized. The lower arm of the lever 16 displaces the shaft 20 towards the flywheel ring 17 just before termination of the displacement contact member 65 of the plunger of the solenoid closes the circuit of the starter motor. When the motor runs it drives the shaft 20 and displaces it and pushes the pinion completely into mesh. When the engine starts the nut 38 releases the clutch.
