Abstract
602,120. Inertia starters. CLEVELAND, F..J. (Bendix Aviation Corporation). Oct. 12, 1945, No. 26721. [Class 7 (v)] An inertia starter, Fig. 1, whose flywheel 5 is connected to the engine engaging jaw member 8 through a reduction gear 16, 17 known torque limiting clutches housed in the casing 4 and a clutch 41 has its flywheel energized by an electric motor 6 through a free wheel device 29, 31, 33 and clutch 41 held in engagement by a spring 51, the said clutch being held from engagement with the flywheel, after it has been energized, by a solenoid 71, acting through a lever 55 to the thrust member 56, Fig. 2, when the jaw member 8 is engaged with the corresponding engine member 9. In operation the knob 80 is pulled, so closing the switch 78 and energizing the motor 6 and flywheel 5. Knob 80 is then pushed to break switch 78, engage members 8 and 9, close switch 79, energize the solenoid 71 so disengaging the flywheel 5 from clutch 41 and close clutch 14 so that the motor 6 remains in circuit and gives the engine an initial rotation. The contacts 83 of switch 79, Fig. 6, are then turned through 90 degrees so that the insulated portions 85, 86 of the switch break the circuit, the motor 6 and solenoid 71 are then de-energized and the clutch 41 engages the flywheel 5 which then expends its energy turning the engine. During this latter operation the armature of motor 6 is free to come to rest because of the free wheel unit 29, 31, 33. When the engine starts the controls are returned to the position shown in Fig. 2. Specification 304,275, [Class 7 (v)], and U.S.A. Specifications 2,038,191 and 2,156,602 are referred to.
