Abstract

1288849 Starting prime movers ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 19 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54942/70 Heading H2H A arrangement for starting an internal combustion engine comprises a starter motor 10 having a series winding 12 and an auxiliary winding 13 connectible to a battery 16 via contacts of a relay 14, the armature shaft 17 of the starter motor having a slidable drive assembly 18 including a sleeve 19 and a pinion 23 adapted to mesh with a flywheel 36 of the engine, the sleeve and the pinion being coupled by a screw thread 20 and the drive assembly being displaceable on the shaft 17 by the relay armature 35, the arrangement being such that prior to the meshing of the pinion with the flywheel the motor windings produce a low torque in one sense whilst on meshing, the windings produce a relatively high torque in the opposite sense. On closing a starter switch 40 the winding 13 is energized via a contact 41 of the relay and the winding 12 is energized via a winding 38 of the relay, the windings being energized in opposite directions so that the torque produced is insufficient to rotate the motor armature 11. The energization of the winding 38 causes the armature 35 to move the drive assembly 18 towards the flywheel 36 via a lever 34. If the pinion 23 meshes with the flywheel 36, contacts 42 and a switch 15 are closed thereby energizing the windings 12, 13 in the same sense. This torque is transmitted to a toothed member 22 of a clutch 21 via the screw thread 20 and the sleeve 19. The toothed member 22 engages teeth 25 of the pinion to rotate the pinion until the motor starts whereupon the pinion rotates faster than the shaft 17 thereby disengaging the clutch 21. If the pinion and the flywheel do not initially mesh correctly, the sleeve 19 moves towards the pinion thereby rotating it via the screw thread 20 until correct alignment is achieved. If the pinion, on its initial movement, joins against the flywheel, the movement of the sleeve 19 forces the drive assembly 18 to rotate slightly so that on operating the starter switch 40 a second time, change in relative positions of the pinion and the flywheel ensure that the jamming does not reoccur.
