Abstract

1,145,737. Engine turning gear. C.A.V. Ltd. Oct.7, 1966 [Oct.28, 1965], No.45775/65. Heading F1K. A starting mechanism for an internal-combustion engine comprises in combination a motor 10, a part 18 rotatable by the motor, an axially movable pinion 15 which is connected to the part through the intermediary of a quick pitch screw-thread or equivalent connection, a member 28 in screwthread engagement with a further part rigidly connected to the pinion, resilient means 29 biasing the member in a direction away from the pinion and means operable when it is required to use the mechanism for preventing rotation of the member, the arrangement being such that when the member is prevented from rotating and the motor is energized the pinion will be moved axially into engagement with a toothed wheel of the engine by the action of the quick pitch connection and in the event of a tooth on the pinion abutting with a tooth on the toothed wheel angular movement will be imparted to the pinion the member continuing to be moved axially against the action of the resilient means. As the armature 32 moves radially inwards the ratchet 30 engages the member 28 and then the motor controlling switch is closed to energize the motor at full power. As the motor starts to rotate rotary motion is imparted to the part 18 through the clutches and since the sleeve 16 cannot rotate the quick pitch thread causes the sleeve 16 and pinion to be moved axially against the action of the pinion return spring. In the event that a tooth on the pinion abuts with a tooth on the toothed wheel the pinion will be moved angularly when this occurs the member 28 will be moved axially in a direction towards the pinion against the action of the spring 29. The purpose of chamfering the teeth of the ratchet 30 and the member 28 is to prevent locking engagement occurring between the two.
