Abstract
1454346 Starter drives ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 8 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 05808/74 Heading F1K A starter drive for an internal combustion engine has a pinion 33 connected by a freewheel 30 to a threaded sleeve 6 mounted on a coarse screw threaded portion 5 of a driving-shaft 3, the sleeve being acted upon by a braking device. The braking device is provided with a clutch ring 16 rotatably fast with the threaded sleeve 6 but mounted for slidable movement thereon and the clutch ring 16 so maintained by a compression spring 17 in abutment with a locking sleeve 20 rotatably mounted on the threaded sleeve 6, the locking sleeve being provided with ratchet teeth 41 which are associated with a pawl 44 which is controlled by an electromagnet (not shown) through the medium of a pivotally mounted lever. A return spring 19 is arranged between the end of the threaded sleeve and a stop member 10 a first brake disc 23 is mounted rotatably on the screwed sleeve 6, a second brake disc 27 is arranged at the other end of the locking sleeve 20. When the starter main switch is closed the electromagnet is energized to engage the pawl 44. This locks the locking sleeve. When the locking sleeve is locked the screwed sleeve 6 is unable to rotate and the screwed sleeve and the pinion are translated axially by the coarse thread 5. When the pinion 33 is engaged with the toothed rim gear 40 the ratchet is disengaged from the pawl 44 and the screwed sleeve 6 and the freewheel 30 together with the pinion are able to rotate. When the pinion is fully engaged the pawl 44 extends into an annular groove 61 so that during the starting operation the pinion 33 is held in engagement with the ring gear.
