Abstract

1345994 Starter drives GENERAL MOTORS CORP 11 May 1972 [17 May 19711 22124/72 Heading F1K Upon commencement of rotation of a rotor 38 a plunger 32 is caused to move axially towards a pinion 18 through the inertial interaction between splines 42 and 43. Part of the torque available from the rotor 38 is imparted to the shaft 20 due to the preload exerted on the clutch by the spring 26 and the Bellville springs 22. However being slidably connected to the plunger 32 by splines 94 the driving clutch assembly 36 and the clutch backplate 102 do not move axially towards the pinion end until the flange 120 of the plunger 32 engages with and axially clutches the flange 122 of nut 34. Upon such clutch engagement translational movement of nut 34 is communicated via flanges 120 and 122 to the shaft 20 and the cup 54 thereby advancing the pinion 18 towards the starter on ring gear 14. Upon clearance of interference between the teeth of pinion 18 with those of gear 14 the spring 26 advances the pinion 18 into full engagement with the ring gear. Rotation of the ring gear 14 by the pinion 18 then commences with the clutch assembly 36 being held in an engaged position determined by the abutment of flange 120 of the plunger 32 with the snap ring 78. The resisting torque represented by the non-started engine results in the application of torque between the shaft 20 and the plunger housing 40 that causes splines 42 and 44 due to their different pitches to apply an axial rearward jacking force on nut 34 and a forward jacking force on the shaft 20. The effect of the jacking force is not to translatably move the nut 34 towards the rotor end 62 because such translational movement is prohibited by the abutment of flanges 120 and 122 but to cause a slight forward translational movement of the shaft 20 relative to the nut. This forward screwing of the shaft 20 in the nut 34 correspondingly moves Bellville springs 22 axially and thereby increases the normal axial force applied by the clutch backplate 102 to the driving and driven discs 90, 92.
