1387384 Engine starter drives BENDIX CORP 2 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 15749/73 Heading F1K A starter drive for an internal combustion engine is adapted to be driven by a power shaft 12 and includes a sleeve 14 slidably keyed to the power shaft, a pinion gear 26 slidably journalled for axial movement relative to the power shaft and adapted for movement into and out of engagement with a gear 22 of the engine and a driving clutch member 20 and a driven clutch member 30 having complementary inclined torque transmitting teeth 34 and 36. The sleeve has external helical splines 18 formed on one extremity thereof and threadedly receiving the driving clutch member, the driven clutch member being secured to the pinion gear for movement therewith. A barrel housing 38 including an opened and a closed end is slidably supported at the closed end adjacent the other extremity of the sleeve and resilient means 50 within the housing abuts the driving clutch member and biases the clutch members into the engaged position. The clutch members are adapted to provide an over-running and an indexing function, the teeth having a driving surface and an over-running surface, according to the invention the teeth are undercut so that the driving surface is angularly dispersed relative to the axial plane of the clutch members. The arrangement is such that the driving surface of the teeth forms an angle between 5 degrees and 40 degrees relative to an axial plane. Means for moving the starter gear assembly toward or away from the engine gear 22 may comprise a conventional solenoid or an air or hydraulic cylinder actuated lever (not shown) connected with a shift collar 52.
