Abstract

1371105 Starting I C engines JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 9 March 1972 [3 April 1971] 8628/71 Heading F1K A starter motor for an I.C. engine comprises a shaft 12 rotatable in casing 11 and carrying armature assembly 13 and pinion assembly 15, which is axially movable between a retracted position and an operative position in which a pinion 18 engages a ring gear of the engine, the shaft 12 and pinion assembly being connected by a screw thread, a member 22 being frictionally engaged with the pinion assembly for rotation therewith and a detent 26 engageable with member 22 to resist rotation of the member and drive the pinion assembly towards the operative position when the shaft 12 rotates. In the operative position, the detent lies adjacent the side of the member 22 remote from pinion 18 to resist movement of the pinion assembly to the retracted position, the detent returning to a position clear of the pinion assembly when the starter motor is de-energized. The detent is operated by electromagnets 27 energized simultaneously with the starter motor. The member 22 is a disc having teeth which are engaged by arm 26a of detent 26.
