Abstract

1,244,672. Planetary gears. BENDIX CORP. 3 Sept., 1968 [13 Sept., 1967], No. 41784/68. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division H2] An actuator comprises a floating gear to which a rotating force is directly applied and which engages, either internally or externally, a stationary gear and an output gear. As shown, a floating gear 18 has teeth 24 meshing external teeth 22 of an output gear 12 and has teeth 28 meshing external teeth 26 of stationary gears 16, the teeth being of equal pitch and the difference between the number of teeth 24 and 22 equaling the difference between the number of teeth 28 and 26. The gear 18 is fast with a laminated armature ring 42 surrounded by four electromagnets 48a and four permanent magnets spaced alternately around the periphery of a fixed housing 40. The electromagnet coils are connected to four commutator segments engaged by two brushes driven about the commutator segments by an external motor (not shown). In a modification the floating ring has two sets of external teeth engageable with internally toothed stationary and output gears, in other modifications the stationary or the output gear is externally toothed whilst the other gear is internally toothed.
