Abstract

[Also in Division H2] Reverse running of a single phase synchronous motor is prevented by providing one gear-wheel 10 in the driven train with at least one tooth having a stepped profile which engages the teeth of a meshing gear-wheel 16 in the incorrect direction. As shown in Fig. 1(a) for the required direction of rotation the smooth faces of the teeth are in engagement, but in the reverse direction (Fig. 1(b)) step 12 of gear-wheel 10 engages tip 19 of the teeth of gear-wheel 16 to stop rotation so that the motor can then restart in the correct direction. The gear-wheel 17 may be the output drive pinion of the motor, Fig. 4 (not shown), or the shaped teeth can be provided on the armature hub and co-operate with an idler wheel, Fig. 3 (not shown). The gear-wheel may be made as two plastics discs one having normal teeth without steps and the other having shortened teeth. The two discs are assembled together out of register to provide the stepped tooth profile, Fig. 5 (not shown).
