Abstract

1519950 Starter for an internal combustion engine LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 2 Oct 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 44811/74 Heading F1K The invention relates to a starter for an internal combustion engine comprising an electromagnet and a flexible resilient lever 18 supported 25 intermediate its ends for pivotal movement about an axis at right angles to a starter shaft 12; the lever connecting a pinion assembly 13 and the armature 17 of the electromagnet so that the pinion assembly can be moved between an operative and a rest position according to the invention one end of the lever is coupled to the armature 17 for movement therewith by a coupling 22, 23 including adjustable means whereby the position which the end of the lever occupies relative to the armature can be set. By virtue of a helical splined connection between the shaft 12 and the pinion assembly 13 the axial movement of the assembly 13 between its rest position and its operative position is accompanied by rotational movement of the assembly relative to the shaft.
