Abstract

Class 7(5) [Also in Group XXXV] In an engine starter comprising a pinion 19 arranged to be coupled with the driving shaft of the starter motor and to be shifted axially into mesh with an engine gear 31, an electromagnet 4, 6 disposed at the end of the motor remote from the pinion and causing, when actuated, a bridge '8 to move in a direction towards the pinion, contacts 9, 14 and 9, 15 actuated by the bridge and arranged so that when the latter moves through a first distance the motor is energized via a resistance 18 and rotates at a low speed, and that when the bridge completes its movement the resistance is short-circuited, thrust rods 27 are provided which extend parallel to the motor shaft and bear at one end against the bridge 8 whilst the other ends are connected to an actuating ring which shifts the pinion towards the gear 31 when the bridge moves through the first distance. The bridge 8 is formed with opposed slots of different lengths in which is disposed a plate 10 carrying the ring contact 9. the unequal slot lengths causing the contact 9 to tilt when the electromagnet is energized and connect the motor to a battery via the contact 14 and the resistance, the resistance being cut out when the stroke of the electromagnet armature 6 is completed and the contact 9 is moved to a perpendicular position to engage contact 15. The first movement of the bridge causes the pinion to partially engage the gear 31 but upon completion of the stroke of the armature 6 the motor overruns the gear 31, and a dog 22, which is operationally connected to the pinion sleeve 19a, engages in a helical slot in a driving member 21 fixed to the motor shaft and effects complete engagement of the pinion in the gear 31. The actuating ring is provided with resilient buffers, which during the initial engaging movement, contact an element 24 attached to the pinion 19. When the engine overruns the starter the pinion 19 is retracted by spring 25 and the .element and buffers again abut and fractionally prevent overspeeding of the motor
