Abstract
385,813. Turning-gear. BOSCH AKT.- GES., R., 4, Militarstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. April 14, 1932, No. 10673. Convention date, April 24, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] An internal-combustion engine is started by means of an inertia mass 3 by first engaging a pinion 4 with the engine whilst the pinion is connected to the inertia mass by a friction clutch 10, 14, then disconnecting the pinion from the inertia mass, running the latter up to high speed, and finally connecting the inertia mass to the pinion by means of the friction clutch. The inertia mass 3 is secured to the armature shaft 2 of the starting motor, on which is freely mounted the pinion 4 formed integrally with a sleeve 5 threaded at 6 to engage the flanged clutch member 7 carrying clutch discs 14 in engagement with clutch discs 10 on the inertia mass 3. To start the engine, a switch 32 is closed and energizes the auxiliary field winding 31 ; the armature assembly 1 .. 7 rotates and moves axially until the pinion 4 engages the toothed flywheel 36, whereupon movement ceases. The lever 19 is then moved to the left, whereupon the clutch is disengaged, the switch arm 25 closed by the finger 23, the main field winding 33 energized and the inertia mass rotated. The lever 19 is then returned to its original position, whereby the clutch is re-engaged and the energy stored in the inertia mass transmitted to the pinion 4 ; the switch arm 25 remains down owing to the energization of the holding-coil 28, so that the electric motor assists in turning the engine.
