Abstract
434,081. Turning-gear. DELCO-REMY CORPORATION, 329, East 1st Street, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Dyer, J. B.) Nov. 20, 1933, No. 9473/35. Convention date, Jan. 28,1933. Divided out of 433,937. [Class 7 (v)] [See also Group XXXV] An electrical starting device for an internalcombustion engine comprises an electromagnet 41 having two coils 48, 50 adapted to be energized under control of the engine throttle to move the armature 40 to close the starting motor switch 54, 56, 64, one coil 50 being short-circuited when the starting motor switch closes the other coil 48 then holding the switch closed until the engine' starts. The armature 40 is secured by a lost motion connection to a lever 36 co-operating with a splined sleeve 26 and an over-running clutch 28 on the shaft 24 of the starting motor 20 so that movement of the armature 40 to close the starting motor switch also brings the motor pinion 30 into mesh with the engine gear 32. Energization of the coils 48, 50 is controlled by an electromagnetic switch 91 which is energized only when the ignition switch 65 and the switch A<1> are closed. The switch A<1> which is preferably of the kind described in Specification 434,082, [Group XXXVII], is closed by movement of a member 84 connected to the engine throttle and is adapted to be opened by suction produced by running of the engine. The starting apparatus is de-energized when the engine starts either by the effect of engine suction as described above or by the de-energization of the electromagnet 91 by the counter voltage produced therein by the engine driven generator 69. The coil 50 is provided with a few turns more than the coil 48 so that opening of the motor switch is ensured when on opening of the contacts of the switch 91 a current flowing from the battery through wire 110 and coils 50 and 48 produces opposing fluxes in these coils. If the engine fails to start, opening of the starting motor switch may be effected by opening the ignition switch, free movement of the armature sufficient to allow the starting motor switch to open being permitted by the lost motion connection. The movable contact 64 of the motor switch is spring pressed on to the fixed contacts 54, 56 when the switch is closed.
