Abstract

432,553. Starting prime movers. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and WATSON, E. A., Great King Street, Birmingham. Dec. 30, 1933, No. 36736. [Class 38 (iv)] An automatic starting system for an internalcombustion engine comprises a combination of three electromagnets, one of which serves to close the starting switch, the second to control the circuit containing the first electromagnet, and the third (responsive to starting motor current) to control a switch in the circuit containing the second electromagnet, together with means dependent on the motion of the engine for supplementing the action of the second electromagnet. The starter motor s is controlled by a switch a the solenoid circut of which is completed through a manual switch e and contacts i on a spring strip g which is moved to open the circuit when the electromagnet l operates. This electromagnet has two windings, one p connected across the generator q and the other k connected across the starter motor through a switch u operated by the starter motor current. This switch comprises a single turn r surrounding a core x. When the starting motor is taking a heavy current these contacts are open but when the current drops due to the engine starting these contacts close and complete the circuit of the winding k which causes operation of the armature l to break the circuit of the starting switch solenoid. This circuit is maintained open during normal running by the winding p being energized from the generator. Instead of the winding p any means responsive to engine operation to keep open the circuit of the starting switch solenoid such as a switch operated by the pressure in the engine lubrication or induction system may be used.
