Abstract

242,115. Barker, R. W., (Anti-Stall Inc.). Jan. 6, 1925. Starting and assisting prime movers.-For an electric starter having automatic coupling means between the starting motor 11 and the engine and an electric battery 10 supplying the motor and the ignition system 13 of the engine, a controlling mechanism comprises a normally open make-and-break mechanism 25 in the circuit 20 of the motor, a second circuit 27 from the battery being controlled by a manual switch 22 having two leads in parallel, a lead 23 to the ignition system 13 and a lead 24 to an electromagnet 34 operative upon the make-and-break mechanism 25. The lead 24 to the magnet 34 has a normally closed make-and-break mechanism 50, 51, so that the magnet can only be energized simultaneously with the closing of the ignition system but can be de-energized independently. The core 35 of the magnet 34 is normally raised by a spring 37 and carries a contact 31 adapted to bridge contacts 27, 28 in the motor circuit 20. The upper part of the core 35 is enclosed by a cover 61 which is removable to allow manual actuation of the movable contact 31. One terminal of the magnet 34 is connected to the yoke 38 and to a binding-post 40 connected to earth. The other terminal is connected to an armature 49 carrying the contact 50, which is normally held in engagement with the contact 51 by a spring 55. An electromagnet 44, having a fixed core 45 adjacent to the armature 49, is connected at one end to the earthed yoke 38 and at the other end by a lead 48 to an engine-driven generator 14, so that the contacts 50, 51 are separated when the engine is running and the circuits of the magnet 34 and the motor 11 are thus broken. The generator 14 is connected to the switch 22 through an automatic cut-out 18. In case of failure of the generator, the contacts 50, 51 may be separated by hand by means of stems 53, 58 connected by an insulation 57, the stem 58 being normally held in position in a bearing 59 by a spring detent 60. If the engine slows down under a heavy load, the generator 14 ceases to function and the contacts 50, 51 are closed by the spring 55, bringing the motor 11 into action to assist the engine.
