Abstract

427,088. Starting prime movers. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. July 10, 1933, No. 19487. Convention date, July 11, 1932. [Class 38 (iv)] In an automatic electric starting system for internal - combustion engines in which the control circuit 12 of an electromagnetic starting circuit switch 4 is controlled by a switch 13, 14 operated in response to cranking current and the voltage of an engine driven generator G, rotation of the engine in either sense causes connection of the starter battery 1 to the coil 26 of the switch 13, 14 which coil is also connected to the generator G. A switch 32 responsive to the pressure in the engine intake manifold operates between contacts 34, 35 so as to connect the battery across the coil 26 when the engine is rotating forwardly and also during backward rotation or backfire. A resistance 39 in the generator lead is provided for preventing discharge of the battery through the generator. The arrangement is such that, after starting, if the engine is rotating so slowly that the generator G is not operative, the starter switch is not operated because of the supplementary action of the battery 1 on the coil 26. During backfire, the switch gear is prevented from operating by the battery 1 until after the engine comes to rest. In a modification the control circuit of the switch 4 includes two sets of contacts in parallel, one set normally open, being controlled by the cranking current of the starter motor and the other set, normally closed, by two coils one of which is connected across the generator and the other across the battery when the starting switch is closed. The action of the generator energized coil is supplemented by the battery through a switch responsive to forward and backward rotation of the engine as shown in the Figure. One of the contacts controlled by cranking current is mounted on a bimetallic strip connected to a contact of the main starter switch so that prolonged cranking causes opening of the control circuit for the electromagnetic starting switch and stops cranking until the bimetallic strip has cooled. The action is then repeated. The fluid pressure responsive device operating the switch 32 may be of the diaphragm or of the pistonoperated type.
