[Class 7 (v)] In an inertia starter comprising a flywheel c driven by an electric motor i and connected through a coaxially arranged epicyclic or other transmission gearing d and clutch b to a pinion a movable into engagement with the toothed rim f of the engine flywheel, the stator k of the motor is of smaller diameter than a recess in the starter flywheel and is at least partly housed within it. As shown, the flywheel is mounted directly on the armature shaft h of the motor, the pole frame of which is seated in a tubular member m having a flange n secured to the casmg g.
