Abstract
464,008. Turning-gear. BOSCH AKT.- GES., R. May 19, 1936, No. 14131. Convention date, May 23, 1935. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which a clutch 20, engageable at will with the engine to be started, is driven through a friction clutch 10 brought into operation by an axially screwing pressure member 8 after the engagement of the clutch 20, transmission gearing is interposed between the friction clutch and the clutch 10, and the latter is brought into engagement with the engine by a rod 23 passing axially through the clutch 10 and the transmission gearing. As shown, the starter comprises a fly - wheel 3 mounted on the hollow shaft 1 of an electric motor. A toothed wheel 2 on the shaft 1 drives a planet wheel 4 supported on the outer member 6 of the friction clutch, the inner member of which is the nut 8 screwing on a sleeve 9 rotatable in a bearing 13. A pressure plate 11 and spring discs 12 form an abutment for the discs, which are normally held under light pressure by springs 54. The pressure of the nut 8 on the discs is reduced by springs 52 acting on bolts 51. The sleeve 9 is formed with pinion teeth 14 driving through a twostage planetary gear 15-17 a cup 18 engaging the clutch member 20 through a quick-pitch thread 21. The clutch member 20 is mounted on the rod 23, which is normally held in the position shown by a spring 53. When the flywheel 3 has been set in rotation, and the clutch 20 is driven with low torque through the lightly engaged clutch 10, the clutch 20 is engaged with the engine by the rod 24, which is displaced by a lever, electromagnet, or other means. When the clutch 20 is in full engagement, a shoulder 29 on the rod 24 presses a shell 28 against the clutch plates 10 and the clutch is tightened by the nut 8 to transmit full torque.
