[Class 10] [Also in Group XXVII] A momentum power-storing apparatus applicable as an engine starter comprises between a flywheel 1 and a clutch member 14 a resilient coupling 4 capable of first absorbing energy from the flywheel and then giving it up to the engine &c. to be started or driven. The coupling 4 is preferably capable of storing half the energy accumulated in the flywheel. As shown, the coupling 4 comprises annular rubber masses connected at their periphery to a sleeve 13 and at their centres to hollow shafts 11, 12, the shaft 11 being connected through reduction gearing 7 .. 10 to the flywheel 1, and the shaft 12 being connected by axial splines to the clutch 14. The flywheel 1 is set in rotation by means of an electric motor 3 through a clutch 5 threaded on the motor shaft, or by means of a cranking handle 2 driving a shaft 6 connected by splines 16 to the shaft lI. The clutch member 14 is then moved by a lever 15 into engagement with the engine &c. to be started or driven The coupling 4 may comprise metallic springs or a piston or diaphragm adapted to compress air in a cylinder &c. In a modification, Fig. 2, a motor 3 arranged laterally drives the sleeve 13 by means of a pinion 19, and kinetic energy is stored in the sleeve 13 and the armature of the motor 3 before the clutch 14 is engaged.
