Clutches, ratchet.-Transmission gear for motor-vehicle engine-starters comprises a friction clutch automatically released on overrunning by a threaded connection, which is arranged between the driven member and the starter pinion and serves solely to change the pressure between the clutch parts. The hollow driven shaft 3, with the pinion 4, is slidable on the armature shaft 2 and engages by a steep thread 5 a nut 6, to which are splined clutch discs 10, adapted to engage discs 11 slidable on a drum 12 on the shaft 2. The pinion is removable by unscrewing an abut. ment nut 9. A compression spring 7 normally holds the shaft 3 against the nut 9, and the discs 10, 11 in light contact. On moving the shaft 2 to the left, the discs are tightened, either by action of the thread 5 when the pinion meshes with the engine flywheel 14 or by direct axial thrust if the teeth foul, the clutch automatically disengaging when the engine starts. The shafts 2, 3 are carried in a bearing 13.
