Abstract
341,270. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1964. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1929. [Class 7 (v).] An engine starter comprises a low-speed shaft 15 with a clutch member 17 for engaging an engine member 18, a flywheel shaft 7 axially aligned with the shaft 15 and having its bearing 9 in a barrel 14 surrounding the shaft 15, a countershaft 27, and a train of gearing connecting the shafts 7, 15 and including a yieldable driving connection. The shaft 7 of the flywheel 6 has gear teeth 31 engaging a gear 30 loosely mounted on the countershaft 27 by means of a multiple-plate friction coupling 34, 35, alternate plates 34 being splined upon a tubular extension 32 of the gear 30 and upon the countershaft 27, and the plates being maintained in engagement by a dished spring plate 36. A gear 26 on the shaft 27 engages a gear 24 mounted on the flange 22 of the barrel 14, in which the shaft 15 is splined and is moved axially by shifting means engaging a ring 20. The flywheel is set in rotation manually by means of a cranking shaft 46 carrying a worm 45 engaging a worm wheel 39 meshing with a pinion 38 on the end of the sleeve 14. The wheel 39 is mounted on a bolt 43 threaded in a part 44 of the casing 2 and is recessed to provide a seat 40 for a bearing 41 held in place by a retaining ring 42.
