[Class 7 (v).] A hand-actuated starter for internal-combustion engines comprises a clutch member 19, which is automatically moved axially into engagement with an engine member 20, and a gear 11 driven from a cranking-shaft 13 and connected to the clutch member 19 through a friction clutch 29, 30, the gear 11 being provided with means for preventing rotation in one direction, so that the friction clutch slips in the event of back-fire. As shown, the clutch member 19 is connected to a shaft 40 by longitudinal splines and by a central rod 45 provided at the end with nuts 46, 47, a spring 48 being interposed between the member 19 and the shaft 40. A sleeve 31 in threaded engagement with the shaft .40 is connected to the gear 11 through the multiple- .plate friction clutch 29, 30, alternate plates of which engage splines 32 on the sleeve 31 and slots 27 in a cup 21 secured to the gear 11 and surrounded by a sleeve 28. Springs 36 acting on the clutch plates are engaged by studs 48 on a ring 39 abutting against an adjustable nut 37. The gear 11 is engaged by a pinion 12 on the hand-driven cranking shaft 13, and backward rotation of the gear 11 is prevented by a ring 58 splined in the hollow hub of the gear 11 and having ratchet teeth held by a spring 59a in engagement with corresponding teeth on a member 56 mounted on the housing member 5. Automatic axial movement of the clutch member 19, on rotation of the gear 11 and sleeve 31, is effected by a divided ring 51, Figs. 1 and 3, which is carried by the lip 50 of an oil sealing member 49 and has lugs 54 in engagement with notches 55 in the periphery of the clutch jaw 19. A spring 53 engages a groove on the ring 51 to hold it in frictional engagement with the lip 50.
