Abstract
617,233. Turning-gear. WASEIGE, C. R. Sept. 25, 1940, No. 14555. Convention date, July 28, 1939. [Class 7 (v)] A fly-wheel 1 driven through a centrifugal clutch by an electric motor 78 transmits movement to an engine engaging jaw 61 through epicyclic gearing surrounding the hub of the fly-wheel and variably - tensioned resilient mechanism enclosed in the barrel 32, an independent friction clutch device being adapted to slip only if abnormal resistance is encountered. As the motor speeds up, a centrifugal band clutch 83 engages the hub 79 of the pinion 76, the drive being then transmitted to the fly-wheel 1 and through the ensuing epicyclic gearing to the claw 61. Adequate speed having been attained, the central rod 67 is moved axially by electromagnetic means compressing the spring 64 and sliding the claw 61 into engagement with the engine crank-shaft. The shock is absorbed by the spring 53, one end of which abuts a flange on a sleeve 50 while the other presses into an annular cup 47 which is internally and externally threaded or splined to engage the members 32, 50. Internally, the member 50 is splined to the sleeve 60, terminating in the claw 61. Excessive torque results in slipping at the friction clutch 39 interposed between the toothed annulus 36 and adjustable spring- pressed pins 38. Hand actuation may be effected from the shaft 88 through the pinion 86.
