Abstract
528,775. Turning-gear. POTEZ, H. C. A. May 15, 1939, No. 14424. Convention date, May 18, 1938. [Class 7 (v)] In a starter for aircraft or other engines, in which energy is stored in one or more springs 16 or other means during half a revolution of a crank disc 13 and restored to the starter shaft during the followmg half revolution, a free-wheel mechanism 4 is interposed between the crank disc 13 and the driving shaft 2 of the starter. The shaft 2 may be driven by a handle 1 or by a low-power electric motor, and the spring 16 by a piston compressing a fluid. As shown, the shaft 2 is connected through the free-wheel 4 to a shaft 6 having a ratchet wheel 7 engaged by a pawl 8 to prevent backward rotation. A friction clutch 9 connects the shaft 6 to a gear 11 meshing with teeth on the crank disc 13. The transmission from the disc 13 to the engine shaft 37 comprises a disconnectable coupling 18, gearing 23, 24, shafts 25, 26, 27 coupled at 25a, a dog clutch 33, and gearing 35, 36. The coupling 18 comprises a ball 19 engaging in recesses in discs 18, 20, the disc 20 riding axially against a spring 21 to release the ball 19 if the engine backfires ; the clutch 9 can also slip under backfire. The dog clutch 33 is threaded at 30 on the shaft 27 in order to effect disengagement when the engine starts. In a modification, the coupling 18 is replaced by a shaft which is adapted to yield to torsion.
