Abstract
413,799. Driving and turning gear; flywheels. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., HULSE, F. W., and PERKINS, H., Armoury Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. March 3, 1933, No. 6462. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v).] A hydraulic coupling is enclosed in the crank case of a motor-vehicle engine, one half 2 of the coupling forming part of the flywheel. The external gear wheel 11, normally driven through the second half 10 of the coupling, is directly coupled to the flywheel 2 for starting, teeth 18, 19 being engaged by the action of Bowden mechanism on a sliding collar 20. A kickstarter then drives the wheel 11. Alternatively, the gear wheel may be at the other end of the crank shaft and be clutched thereto for starting by a spring-pressed ratchet wheel keyed to the shaft.
