Abstract
466,605. Motor vehicles. GARNER, J. P. Nov. 27, 1935, No. 32840. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] Transmission mechanism comprises an upper casing 10 fitting on and secured to the top of a lower casing 5, the upper casing being adapted to receive a standard construction of variable gear 11 or an electric motor, and the lower casing containing a standard construction of differential gear 2 and a transmission shaft 19 which is driven by the variable gear or the electric motor. In the construction shown the upper casing contains a variable gear having side-by-side shafts 13, 14 driven by an internalcombustion engine (not shown) through a clutch 15, and driving the shaft 19 through chain or other gearing 16, 18 the ratio of which is changeable to suit the work of the vehicle. An auxiliary gear-box may be provided between the variable gear and the shaft 19. The differential gear 2 drives axle shafts 3, 4 which drive the front wheels of the vehicle. When an electric motor is used the variable gear 11 may be dispensed with. The casings 5, 10 are joined at 9- in the horizontal plane containing the centre lines of the axle shafts.
