Abstract

547,766. Driving auxiliary mechanism on motor vehicles. BROMILOW & EDWARDS, Ltd., and SWIFT, H. W. March 14, 1941, No. 3547. [Class 79 (ii)] The front part 8 of the divided propeller shaft of a vehicle carries a slidable pinion 13 splined thereon so as to be capable of selectively engaging either (1) an internally-toothed wheel 22 on the rear part 25 of the propeller shaft to drive the road wheels, or (2) a reducing gear train 14, 15 enclosed in a casing 12 and driving a pump, dynamo or other machine (not shown) the pinion 13 having an intermediate free position. In the construction shown the casing 12 is part of a housing 2 bolted to a frame member 4. The shaft 8 may be coupled directly to the usual change - speed gear - box (not shown), but is shown as connected thereto through universal joints 9, 11 and a short shaft 10 which may be interchangeable with others of different lengths to suit different vehicles.
