[Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (iv)] A power unit for tractors comprises an internal-combustion engine 1, means on the engine crank-case for suspending it in a vehicle frame, a clutch housing 5 fixed to the crank-case, a casing 6 enclosing the change-speed gear 7, two trains of reducing gear 8a, and differential gear 11, the rear part of the casing 6 having axle housings 13 fixed thereto, so that the whole unit is mounted as a rigid unit with three-point suspension on the axles and a part of the vehicle connected to the said suspending means. In the construction shown, a forwardlyextending bracket 3 is fixed to the crank-case 2 and has lugs 4 connected by a trunnion or ball joint to the vehicle frame (not shown). The road wheels 15 are mounted on the axle tubes 13, and a castor wheel 30 may be attached when the power unit is detached from the vehicle or tractor. Stays 16 are provided between the clutch housing 5 and the axle tubes 13. Spring suspension means, such as those described in Specification 457,607, may be provided between the axle tubes and the vehicle frame, and lateral movement of the power unit is prevented by a link 19 pivoted to the frame and to the power unit. A pulley 24, housed in the bracket 3, drives a cooling fan 27 or a dynamo or both, the fan sending cooling air through a cowl 28 arranged over the engine cylinders. The change-speed gear has the lay shaft 20 below the main shaft and drives the axle shafts through two trains of reducing gear comprising bevel gearing 8a and spur gearing. Worm gear may be used instead of bevel gear.
