Abstract
517,282. Motor vehicles. ALVIS, Ltd., and DUNN, W. M. July 15, 1938, No. 20989. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] The chassis comprises a central tubular frame 18 having at least two transverse supports 20 23, the engine 12 being supported thereon to one side of the tube with its crankshaft longitudinal of the vehicle and with its cylinders not vertical but either horizontal or inclined to the vertical. In the construction shown the engine cylinders are nearly vertical and are inclined towards the central vertical plane of the vehicle. The engine has a three-point mounting by means of two rubber pads 22 on the rear support 23 and a ball-joint 24 on a gear casing 19 fixed both to the front support 20 and the tube 18. The engine drives the wheels through the clutch 13, gear-box 14, universal joint 25, a geartrain 16 in the casing 19, and a propeller shaft 17 in the tube 18. Reversing gear may be provided either in the usual changespeed gear 14 or elsewhere in the transmission. The supports 20, 23 carry a fuel tank 26 on the other' side from the engine and may also carry a seat for a gunner or other passenger. The driver's seat may be arranged over the gearbox. Specifications 517,280 and 517,281 are referred to.
