[Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [See also Group XXVII] A motor vehicle is driven by an engine 2 having cylinders 9, 10 in inverted-V form, the engine driving one or more axles through gearing and a longitudinal shaft 4 passing through the space between the cylinders, so as to be at a minimum distance below the engine crank-shaft 23. The engine may be situated at any convenient part of the vehicle. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the engine unit is beneath the rear seat 1 and drives both axles through a change-speed gear-box 3 and worm gear 7, 8. The changespeed gear 19, 16 drives a lay shaft 17 which drives the shaft 4 through spur gearing 11, 12. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the engine drives the change-speed gear through spur gearing 26, 18 and the lay shaft of the change-speed gear is mounted on the shaft 4 which drives one of the axles through worm gear 27, 28. An oil sump 31, Fig. 7, with cooling fins 30, may be provided between the cylinders 9, 10, the shaft 4 passing through a tunnel formed in the sump. The rear driving wheels 33, Fig. 10, may be mounted on the ends of a rigid axle 5, being driven by a differential gear at 37 through shafts 33<a>. The frame 39 is mounted on the axle on helical springs 45, 46 and is guided against lateral movement by elastically - mounted rollers 35 on the axle engaging a guide 38 formed on the differential casing 37 which is fixed to the frame 39 rigidly or by rubber cushions at 40.
