Abstract

460,619. Motor vehicles. LESTER, H. L. P. April 16. 1936, No. 10997. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v)] In a motor vehicle having all four wheels driven, the engine drives longitudinal shafting mounted on the vehicle frame and this shafting drives a separate axle or shaft for each wheel also mounted on the vehicle frame, each axle or shaft comprising a part mounted on the frame and carrying a brake drum, and a second part displaceable relatively to the brakecarrying part for shock-absorbing purposes and carrying the corresponding road wheel. In the construction shown, the engine 1 drives longitudinal shafts 6, 7 through change-speed gearing 2<a>, differential gear 3, and spur gears 4, 5, the shafts 6, 7 being mounted on the chassis frame (not shown) and provided with universal joints 8, 9. Transverse shafts 12, driven through bevel gears 10 from the shafts 6, 7, and carrying brake drums 13, are also ,mounted on the frame and are connected by universal joints 14 and 16 to the stub axles or shafts 15 mounted on steering swivels 17. V-shaped brackets or arms 26, controlled by any suitable springs (not shown), are pivoted at 26<a> to the frame and carry the steering swivels 17. Free-wheel devices 28 are preferably provided in the drive to the front wheels, and the differential gear 3 may be locked when desired. The steering swivels 17 are all controlled from the steering shaft 24, being provided with steering arms 18 connected by links 20 to bell-crank levers 19 pivoted on the spring- suspension arms 26. The bell-crank levers are connected by links 21 to levers 22 pivoted at 25 and coupled together by a tie rod 23 operated by the steering shaft. The rearwardly-directed arms of the levers 22 are inclined towards each other, as shown, to give approximately correct steering. In order that the front wheels only may be steered when desired, the front ends of the rear links 21 are slidable in slots 29 in the levers 22, these slots extending from the lever pivots 25, so that when the ends of these links are in line with the pivots, the rear wheels are not affected by the steering gear. The link ends are held in the slots, in the active position shown, by springs, and are moved towards the pivots 25 by any desired means such as Bowden mechanism operated by the driver.
