Abstract
501,498. Motor-vehicle driving and steering gear. SOC. ANON. A. SAURER. July 11, 1938, No. 20549. Convention date, July 10, 1937. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v)] In a vehicle in which normally the rear wheels only are driven, but in which a supplementary reduction gear-box may be used to drive both the front and the rear wheels, a single band-lever controls both the reduction gear and the front wheel drive so that.these are put in and out of action simultaneously. In cases where all the wheels are steered when the front wheels are driven the said hand lever also connects and disconnects the rear wheels to and from the steering gear. The engine and main gear-box (not shown) drive a shaft 9 leading to an auxiliary gear-box 8. In the position I of the hand lever 3, as shown, the drive passes from shaft 9 to the rear-wheel drive shaft 11 through, the gears 14, 15, 50. When the hand lever is moved to position II lever 6 and arm 12 on shaft 7 are rocked counterclockwise and slide the clutch 13 to the left to mesh gear 16 with 17, so that the drive from shaft 9 to the rear-wheel drive 11 is through the reduction gear 16, 17, 15, 50. Simultaneously the lever 6, through .a spring 18, rocks clutch arm 19 and couples the frontwheel drive shaft 10 to the shaft 11 through clutch 19<1>. The rod 5 which connects the handlever 3 to the lever 6 is also connected to an arm 20 on a front- and rear-wheel steering box 22, the front wheels being steered by levers 25 and the rear wheels by levers 26. In the position shown the front wheels only are steered but when the hand-lever is moved to position II the arm 20, through a spring 24, rocks an arm 23 and couples the levers 26 to the steering gear so that the rear wheels also are steered. The hand-lever may be locked in an intermediate position III, in which the drive shaft 9 is disconnected from both front and rear wheel drives, by means of a catch 46 controlled by a spring- loaded handle 47 and adapted to engage in a notch 49 in a fixed quadrant 39. In this posi- , tion of the hand lever 3 a power take-off shaft 28 may be driven from the shaft 9 through a clutch 27 controlled by a hand-lever 34 pivoted at 35 on the hand-lever 3 and connected to the clutch through linkage 33, 31, 30, 29. The clutch 27 can only be engaged when hand-lever 3 is in the neutral position III, since only in this position can a catch 38 connected by a link' 37 to the hand-lever 34 enter a notch 42 in the quadrant 39.
