A motor vehicle for agricultural purposes comprises an axle unit 33, 34 pivotable relative to the chassis frame about a vertical axis 32 (Fig. 9), an engine (not shown) and a change-speed gearbox A, the output of which is adapted to be transmitted optionally to either or both of two shafts 5, 6, by means of a clutch 4, the shaft 5 being in operative engagement with the drive shaft 321 of a differential gear driving half shafts 1, 2 of the axle unit 33, 34, the shaft 6 having coupling means (Fig. 5, not shown) for the connection of a transmission shaft, means (not shown) being provided on the chassis frame for releasably securing a second axle unit having a differential gear connected to the transmission shaft. The shaft 5 drives the half shafts 1, 2 via a bevel gear and a gear 7, 8 carried by the shaft 32 of the differential gear B. The casing 33, 34 of the half shafts is mounted for steering rotation by bearings 31. A toothed sector 37a is secured by members 37 to the casing 33, 34, and is driven via pinion 38, and chain-coupled sprockets 38a, 40, from a steering column 42. The transmission shaft may be coupled to the shaft 6 by means of a screw coupling and securing cotter pin (Fig. 5, not shown). The length of the transmission shaft and of the longitudinal members of the vehicle may be varied to determine the length of vehicle desired (Figs. 1, 2, not shown). Alternatively, the rear wheel may be dispensed with. The shaft 6 may drive a shaft 17 through a train of gears. The shaft 17 is connected at the front (as shown), or at the rear with a flywheel 18 having a crank-pin 19 for driving implements such as the knives of a mower.
