404,439. Land, garden, and road rollers. BARFORD & PERKINS, Ltd., and KNIGHT, F. B., Invicta Works, Rochester, Kent. Nov. 22, 1932, No. 32998. [Class 6 (i).] A motor-driven hand-steered roller comprises two separate driving rollers driven by differential gearing and a third roller which rolls the ground between the other two and supports the motor. The chassis comprises two side plates carrying the main rollers 5 and rigidly secured on a box-like framework 2 which carries the motor 3 and the front roller 4, the weight being distributed so that the roller pressures on the ground are equal. Power is transmitted to the rollers 5 through universal joints, a gear box, and two clutches mounted between the rollers. A shaft driven by a chain 10 from the gear box drives a differential which drives one roller 5 directly and the other through a shaft 20 and a sleeve thereon. The hand steering- lever 26 is screwed into a member bolted to the side plates. A brake is actuated by a handlever 27, the throttle by a lever 35, and the clutches by a lever 30, rod 31, crank arm 32, and a double spring connection 37. The clutches may be such as described in Specification 343,900, [Group XXXI], forward speeds being engaged when the lever 30 is in the forward position and reverse speeds when it is in the rear position. In a modification there is no reverse gear and the clutch lever operates in the plane of the steering handle. A bracket on the steering handle carries a wheel to come into contact with the ground when the front roller 4 is raised for turning a sharp corner.
